I know I already have an awesome 4th of July wreath, but when I saw this one, I wanted to make another one. I can't decide if I like her buttons better than my stars, so I may end up switching them out for buttons later. I don't have many indoor decorations for this holiday, so one of the wreaths will go inside and hang from the inside of the patio door in the living room.
The perfectionist/OCD part of me was annoyed the whole time at making this. I wanted each wrapping of yarn to line up next to the previous one, but that wasn't going to happen since it's a circle and the inside is smaller than the outside. So the rows on the inside had to overlap - I don't know why, but that bugged the crap out of me. And it took about 2 hours of nap time to wrap. I used one of the straw wreaths since they are a bit thicker compared to the styrofoam ones. Also, with a trusty coupon from JoAnns, it was only $1.79 - cheaper than the foam ones for some reason. I left the plastic wrapping on since it would help keep it less bumpy - not sure if you usually take it off or not...
I cut the stars out of craft foam, but they looked too bright since I didn't use white yarn, I used a cream colored yarn. So I took out the brown ink pad and distressed the stars a bit so they would look a bit darker/worn. I like it a lot better!
hi there! i kept seeing your site pop up on my visitors stats so i headed over....thanks for sharing my link with you readers! i love your wreath ~ the stars look great!
ReplyDeletei bought the same wreath from joann's and i always leave the wrapping on too...seems like the straw could get pretty messy otherwise. have a happy 4th!
I like your stars better.
ReplyDeleteStars over buttons. What kind of yarn did you use? It looks so much nicer!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful....I can't wait to make one...and if it is not to hard my Camp Fire Girls will be making one to...
ReplyDeleteThis looks great!
ReplyDeleteI love how clean yours looks compared to the original. Also you could use felt for the stars...which is what I thought it was until I read your post =)
ReplyDeleteThis is the best one I've seen. How did you hang it? Did you use a hot glun gun for the stars?
ReplyDeleteCori - Thank you!! I glued a loop of ribbon to the back so it's hidden and then hung it on the hook that way. Yep - the stars are glued on!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I'm a sucker for all things patriotic. My husband is a US Marine. I will be making this for sure! Oh and I LOVE your stars way better than the buttons.
ReplyDeleteNice job! Buttons are cute, but stars are authentic. Also, your yarn looks silky; what did you use?
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful, I love it! Did you just use one skein of each?
ReplyDeleteAlso wondering what kind of yarn you used??? Thanks
ReplyDeleteBarbie, Susan, and Megan - I didn't keep the labels for the yarn I used, but I just picked one skien of each of the 3 colors that matched and were a bit darker than the royal blue and bright red. The ones I picked did happen to have a bit of a shine to them, but I just picked stuff that matched and was on sale, and I couldn't tell you what kind they were since I tossed the labels. I did end up with some of each color left, but not a lot - that's why I tossed the label; it didn't have much to hold anymore.
ReplyDeleteSerena I have never made one of these before, so I am just wondering do u periodically use a glue gun to keep the yarn in place?
DeleteI love you wreath! I found your blog through Pinterest. I'm your newest follower. ~ Jamie
ReplyDeleteWow, what a beautiful wreath! I think even I could make this one - I will have to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteAwesome wreath!! This is the craft of the day on One Good Craft! Thank you for sharing it!! http://onegoodcraft.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteAmazing, the more I see your wreaths the more I want to start again. The reason that styrofoam wreaths are so expensive is because styrofoam is made out of oil that is left at the bottom of the drums. Took this little tidbit of info working at Michaels. ;) Keep up the excellent work.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love it - this is my next project!! YAY!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Thanks for sharing. I posted how to make a patriotic wreath for very little money here: http://busymomsdoitbest.blogspot.com/2012/05/happy-memorial-day-in-honor-of-memorial.html#
ReplyDeleteI would love for you to check it out.
What size wreath did you use?
ReplyDeleteI made mine with appliqué stars that are somewhat of a cream to light silver color. I too used a less than bright white yarn. I'm very happy with mine, but I don't think I would do another one. OCD here too! It took me quite a while to get the hang of it. Thanks for the idea. I'm getting lots of compliments on it!
ReplyDeletelove it!!!! Need something for this holiday!!!
ReplyDeletedon't forget you can use those styraphom pool noodles as a wreath form...cheap &
ReplyDeleteonly a dollar at the dollar tree.....8)
Your stars are best! Beautiful job.
ReplyDeleteLove this! I think I might add a couple of sparkler things in the center. Maybe make it look like fireworks or something to go with the July 4th! Thanks for showing your work! You did great!

DeleteAbsolutely love this wreath! I was wondering how you secured your yarn after wrapping each section? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on a door, I invited some friends over to make them. We had a lot of fun, they were easy and they looked great.
ReplyDeleteThanks...

ReplyDeleteLove this!! Want to make but was wondering what size wreath you used and how much of each color yarn did you buy?
ReplyDeleteIs it just one layer of yarn?? I find it has some gaps if its one layer
ReplyDeleteYes, come someone please provide a little more direction on exactly how to make it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove this. Thanks for linking up at the pin it proudly link party last week. I can't wait to see what you link up this week!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of this. Simple to do. Instead of stars I think I might try buttons though. Thanks for posting. I believe my daughter and I have a craft project to do this weekend.

I like the stars much better than the buttons....the traditionalist in me, I guess. The buttons are cute & creative, but the stars look much better to me!
